“Welcome to the Black Parade” is a song from American rock band My Chemical Romance’s third studio album, The Black Parade (2006). It was released on September 12, 2006, as the album’s lead single, with the studio version available on the band’s Myspace on September 2, 2006. My Chemical Romance started writing the song since their start as a band, although in a different style. It was inspired and heavily influenced by Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”, was slower, and was called “The Five of Us Are Dying”. The band did not include it in their first two albums due to their feeling it was incomplete. After moving to Los Angeles to make their third album, they added a fast punk beat, changed the lyrics, and altered the chords of the chorus. The recording process was “very complex” due to the many layers in the song but “fun”, according to guitarist Ray Toro. “Super Freak” is a 1981 single produced and performed by American singer Rick James. The song, co-written by James and Alonzo Miller, was first released on James’ fifth album, Street Songs (1981) and became one of James’ signature songs. “Super Freak” was recorded with other tracks for the Street Songs album between December 1980 – January 1981 at the Record Plant, in Sausalito, California and Motown / Hitsville U.S.A. Recording Studios, Hollywood, California. It features background vocals from James’ Motown labelmates The Temptations—in which the bassist was Greg “Big Money” Brown, Melvin Franklin—and Canadian singer Taborah Johnson. The tenor saxophone solo is by Stone City Band member Daniel LeMelle. James’ improvised lyrics were later toned down by Los Angeles DJ Alonzo Miller, who received co-writing credit. James apparently was not particularly excited about the song, but reputedly wanted to have something on the album that “white folks could dance to.”

“Sunshine of Your Love” is a 1967 song by the British rock band Cream. With elements of hard rock, psychedelia, and pop, it is one of Cream’s best known and most popular songs. Cream bassist and vocalist Jack Bruce based it on a distinctive bass riff he developed after attending a Jimi Hendrix concert. Guitarist Eric Clapton and lyricist Pete Brown later contributed to the song and drummer Ginger Baker plays a distinctive tom-tom drum rhythm. In early 1967, Cream were writing and rehearsing songs for a second album. Their December 1966 debut album, Fresh Cream, was a mix of updated blues numbers and pop-oriented rock songs. Inspired by recent developments in rock music, the group began pursuing a more overtly psychedelic direction. “Sunshine of Your Love” began as a bass phrase or riff developed by Cream bassist Jack Bruce. Cream attended a concert on 29 January 1967 by the Jimi Hendrix Experience at the Saville Theatre in London. Cream guitarist Eric Clapton elaborated in a 1988 Rolling Stone magazine interview: He [Hendrix] played this gig that was blinding. I don’t think Jack [Bruce] had really taken him in before … and when he did see it that night, after the gig he went home and came up with the riff. It was strictly a dedication to Jimi. And then we wrote a song on top of it.

“Fame” is a song recorded by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. It was released on his 1975 album Young Americans and was later issued as the album’s second single by RCA Records in July 1975. Written by Bowie, Carlos Alomar and John Lennon, it was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City in January 1975. It is a funk rock song that represents Bowie’s dissatisfaction with the troubles of fame and stardom. Sources differ on how “Fame” came to be in the studio, but both Doggett and Nicholas Pegg write that it was the product of “happy” accidents. By late 1974, Bowie was staying in New York City, where he met John Lennon during his “lost weekend”. The pair jammed together, leading to a one-day session at Electric Lady Studios in January 1975. There, Carlos Alomar had developed a guitar riff for Bowie’s cover of “Footstompin'” by the Flairs, which Bowie thought was “a waste” to give to a cover. Lennon, who was in the studio with them, came up with the hook when he started to sing “aim” over the riff, which Bowie turned into “Fame” and thereafter, according to Marc Spitz, wrote the rest of the lyrics to the song with Lennon. “Superstition” is a song by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder. It was released on October 24, 1972, as the lead single from his fifteenth studio album, Talking Book (1972), by Tamla.  The lyrics describe popular superstitions and their negative effects. Jeff Beck was an admirer of Wonder’s music, and Wonder was informed of this prior to the Talking Book album sessions. Though at this point he was playing virtually all of the instruments on his songs by himself, Wonder preferred to let other guitarists play on his records, and he liked the idea of a collaboration with Beck. An agreement was quickly made for Beck to become involved in the sessions that became the Talking Book album, in return for Wonder writing him a song. Between the album sessions, Beck came up with the opening drum beat. Wonder told Beck to keep playing while he improvised over the top of it. He improvised most of the song, including the riff, on the spot. Beck and Wonder created a rough demo for the song that day. After finishing the song, Wonder decided that he would allow Beck to record “Superstition” as part of their agreement. “All the Small Things” is a song by American rock band Blink-182. It was the second single and eighth track released from the band’s third album, Enema of the State (1999). The track was composed primarily by guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge as an ode to his then girlfriend. “Message in a Bottle” is a song by English rock band The Police. It was released as the lead single from their second studio album, Reggatta de Blanc (1979). Written by the band’s lead singer and bassist Sting, the song is ostensibly about a story of a castaway on an island, who sends out a message in a bottle to seek love. A year later, he has not received any sort of response, and despairs, thinking he is destined to be alone. The next day, he sees “a hundred billion bottles” on the shore, finding out that there are more people like him out there. The song exemplifies the reggae rock/new wave style of early Police. It is composed in the key of C♯ minor with a chord progression of C#m9-Amaj9-B7-F#m. According to the band’s guitarist, Andy Summers, Sting had initially intended the guitar riff that “Message in a Bottle” is centered around for a different song. The riff in its final form is built of multiple overdubbed guitar parts, played by Summers. Following the main progression of the song, one part features Summers playing a three note figure featuring the root, fifth, and ninth of each chord in succession. A second guitar part plays the identical rhythm with different harmony notes, adding minor or major thirds to each chord, as well as additional extensions such as eleventh and thirteenth notes.
